I think JEvents will do what I want in terms of displaying the info I want.
(Currently shown in a different format here - https://www.cotswoldplayhouse.co.uk/whats-on)
However all the event data that creates this listing is in an external database to Joomla (it's still mysql and on the same server).
Is there any way to fetch the data from another database??
(I could probably write some code to read my d/b and poke the necessary things into the JEvents one but obviously better if there is a proper way to do it!!)

If you can extract the data into a CSV file then it can be imported and updated as an imported calendar. See https://www.jevents.net/frequently-asked-questions/importing-events-in-csv-format
