Is it possible to display the category list above the calendar?

Hello,
Yes it is possible. You would need to use the JEvents Legend module and then place this in a custom module position like: jevprejevents_month.calendar

Note, you will possibly need to do some CSS Styling to make it fit neatly.
Or you could look at the Dynamic Legend module available to Silver Club Members:
