I'd like to associate each event with one (possibly a few) resource person, so I think I may like to use the managed people add-on, but I have some questions:

1. Do the managed people have to be from a pre-set list in the back end, or can any of my registered users be the associated person for an event?

2. If an event does not currently have an associated resource person, is there a way for a user to do it him/herself? (ie. Can I set up a link that says "This event doesn't have a resource person. Click here to become a resource for this event"?)

3. I imagine the person listed as being associated with an event has a linkable name (to their user profile). Can I make it un-linkable? Can I change this depending on user type (eg. User Type A gets a link to their profile, but User Type B gets plain text), or on an individual user basis?

4. I am using the CB user add-on. Currently, the event creator's name links to their CB profile. Will the managed person's name to link to their CB profile too?

Any help here would be much appreciated. Thanks!

It needs to be from a pre-set list in the backend, but you can link people on the managed people list with your Joomla! users.

2. If an event does not currently have an associated resource person, is there a way for a user to do it him/herself? (ie. Can I set up a link that says "This event doesn't have a resource person. Click here to become a resource for this event"?)

When creating an event a button to choose among your people/resources. In that list you can also easily offer a button to create new people/resources.

3. I imagine the person listed as being associated with an event has a linkable name (to their user profile). Can I make it un-linkable? Can I change this depending on user type (eg. User Type A gets a link to their profile, but User Type B gets plain text), or on an individual user basis?

The field to add the link will be offered to all type of people/resources, but I think we can consider improving this and make it as you suggest. Anyway this is not a guarantee we are doing it in the near future.

4. I am using the CB user add-on. Currently, the event creator's name links to their CB profile. Will the managed person's name to link to their CB profile too?

Actually you can extend Managed people addon with the Custom Fields addon, and allow people/resource creators to add more fields to the resources they create, and then use "core" and custom fields to create the layout you need. Actually one of the custom fields you can add is for CB profile. Please check product description for more info:

Please, let us know if you have any more questions.

Just to clarify the answer to point 2 - you can setup a resource requirement for an event e.g. you need 4 people to make the coffee and allow your site user to 'sign' up for these roles. You can restrict the user groups too so that only members of the 'qualified coffee makers' can sign up to the 'coffee maker' role for your event.

Excellent. Thank you both so much for your help!

Another question comes to mind now. :)

If I set up a resource person drop down list with the option to create another, as carcam suggested, is this automatically created, or is there a way to moderate this?
Say, as per Geraint's example, I will only accept "qualified coffee makers" to sign up for coffee duty, but a new user who has not yet been added to this group wants to sign up by choosing to "add another coffee maker": would that person be automatically added or denied, or could they be pending until approved (e.g. the coffee drinkers need to agree on whether you are an acceptable barista, or whether you're likely to burn the pot)?

You would set a limit on how many coffee makers you want and only that many can sign up for that role.

A completely different approach you could take is to look at the RSVP Pro addon which is an attendance addon where you can set capacities and waiting lists - see http://www.jevents.net/products-new/addons/rsvp-pro and the demo videos in particular
