I'm considering upgrading okanaganbusinessevents.com currently a Joomla 2.5.14 site using Jevents v3.1.8 to Joomla 3.4 and the latest version of Jevents. July & August is the time to do it as event listings are reduced.
I'm concerned about the logistics of doing so.
1) If I upgrade the Joomla version to the site, do I risk having my currently posted events stop working?
2) If I upgrade Joomla and the site still works, assuming Jevents still does, if I upgrade jevents will it import all of my existing events and keep on working?
I have about a thousand or so events that have been posted. I use many of them to duplicate and make new events from. I also have about 50 or so that are repeating events.
An alternative would be to build a duplicate site from scratch with the upgrades in place. Is it possible to download the database from the old site and upload it to the new site?
Any thoughts on what the best approach would be for me?

Welcome back :-).
1) No, this shouldn't cause any issues. Simply upgrade Joomla! to 2.5.28 and JEvents to 3.1.45 or 3.2 as these are J3.4 compatible. Then configure the Joomla! updater to use STS releases and it will find 3.4 to one click upgrade. But make sure, all current plugins and modules from other developers are right up to date and that they support Joomla! 3.4.
2) Yes, JEvents is a seemless upgrade you just install over and it will carry on working the way it was.
But always! take a backup prior to carrying out any work.
You could download our database tables and also the joomla! com_categories and asset tables. But this could get complicated.

I haven't taken action on this yet but am feeling the pressure to do so. I keep getting messages from my Webhosting company saying that my site has exceeded the maxmimun Mysql query limit 75000/ hour. Considering the site doesn't get that much traffic, this seems odd.
If I start with a new site i.e. Joomla 3.2 & latest Jevent will I likely face the same problem with the query overload when I get a few hundred events posted? They want me to optimize my mysql but don't think I have the skill to do so.

You will likely get the same issue as it sounds like you are being crawled hard and if they search all your dates for events it can increase MySQL queries.
