I would like to display the menu link like this:

to default to sept. 2017.
When i link the menu to that URL using the system link/url instead of the jevent monthly view (so that i can get the month of sept. 2017 only), it shows ALL calendar categories, not just the 3 I want (2017 national ...) Is there a way to have the menu item default to a month with only particular categories?

Hello,
You would view the month view in the frontend via the menu item, once you have that view copy the url and then create a Joomla! External menu item and enter this url.
To keep the category restrictions you could apply the to the url, or create a new hidden menu item to restrict the users to these x categories.
