I want to create a menu item which takes me to a monthly view with selected catagory/catagories. I see options for day/week/year but not month.
I would also like to hide the selection drop downs and views in this view if that's possible.

Sure,
1. Hide calendar navigation -> Go to JEvents -> Configuration -> What type of navigation bar to use
and set to: Hide Altogether
You may need to do this on the menu items too if you set it to anything but use global.
2. Scroll down the Menu Item creation modal, select ' View by Month'
