Have posted my first event to the calendar but I notice it has an 'add an event' function at the bottom which I don't want. No one should be able to add or edit the events I post. I'm sure it's just a simple box I should check or uncheck but have been round in circles trying to find it!

This box is only shown to people authorised to add events. You can hide it in the JEvents Config 'Hide Admin Panel'
