Hello; I couldn't find this topic in the forum. I'm trying to create a Google API for the Google Maps part of JEvents, but the JEvents instruction page (https://www.jevents.net/docs/club-addons/item/getting-an-api-key-for-google-maps) does not match what Google is showing on their site. So being a novice with API, I'm not sure what to do.

I was able to create an API key, but it is not associated with Google maps. When I inserted the key in the Google Maps API Key (server), it makes the Google Maps on my site worse (totally broken) (https://www.finishlinetiming.com/columbine-high-school-run-for-remembrance).

So I'm looking for accurate instructions.

Thanks.
Hello,

Unfortunately Google keep changing this API :-( 4 times in the last year.

See:
https://elfsight.com/blog/2018/06/how-to-get-google-maps-api-key-guide/

Basically once in the API you need to enable the JavaScript Maps. We are in the process off coding up OpenStreet Maps to avoid google since you also need to add a card too.

Any updates? The API billing with Google is annoying, I'd rather devalue Google Maps by using something else.
Cheers.

It appears to be working. Yeah, the billing could be annoying, but from what I can tell, the billing is based on a certain number of clicks/uses (monthly?), and I doubt I'll reach the minimum. Thanks!

I am about 60% of the way through an implementation of OpenStreetMap using a library that should make adding further providers later easier.

The one fly in the ointment would be you would need a MapQuest api key to do any geocoding since I can't find a free geocoding option for openstreetmap.

Tony was taken into hospital unexpectedly last week (his appendix) so my development time is restricted as a result - hope to have it ready soon.

Thanks for the update. I hope Tony is doing well; an appendix can sneak up on you; I had mine out when I was a kid.

Thanks for the hard work!

I am much better now thank you, unfortunately a very bad state of appendix, had to have open surgery with a 8-10inch cut straight down.

Geraint has made great progress with this and we are into internal testing now.

Many thanks
Tony

I'm very glad you are recovering Tony! That does sound scary.

I have a version for you guys to test.

You need to configure OpenStreetMaps on the Maps Config tab of the Managed Locations settings. I've also included the JEvents Maps theme update for completion.

Please let me know how you get on.

Seems to work ok in Protostar with Bootstrap 2.
That's nice! Much better than Google Maps.

Is there any way to use this in a Bootstrap 3 template?
(empty div gmap now without Leaflet code)

Thanks.

Hi Joris,

Can you provide a link in the interim with it on your BS3 template so we can review the issue?

Many thanks

Sorry, I stopped trying this. I saw too many problems and found another solution.

Thanks anyway.
