Is there a way to have functionality similar to what we have in latest events module? So that way, only events within certain time range will be displayed.

Yes - there is a silver member plugin for JEvents, the time limit plugin. This allows you to constrain menu items (or JEvents in its entirety) to only show events from a set date range.

The other thing you should look at is to simply create a 'date range' menu item where you can set the dates you want to display absolutely or relative to 'today'

In case we use silver member plugin which would allow us to display only events in certain time range, for example, the following three days, can we display events in calendar layout - monthly view?

With Time limit plugin you can limit your time frame site-wide or just module or menu item specific. In those cases you can have a menu item for showing events in next 3 days and another calendar menu item for showing all your events.
