Do I need to purchase a membership in order to create a custom Latest Events Module? If so, what does doing so provide to me other than the support? Documentation?

No you can just create a standard Joomla! Override for it.

This is exactly what I want to do as well, where the output from the Latest Events Module is displayed horizontally with some CSS formatting. Could you explain the Joomla! Override?

If it's just horizontal we can do that with CSS if you provide a link and the amount in a row you want.
