I just installed JEvents. I am trying to create my first category but the Parent dropdown does not allow me to select No Parent. When I try and save it just says "Error Save failed with the following error:"

Thank you, but this isn't a JEvents Error. It's a error with com_content on your site. You can't create categories in articles either.
Can you please try reinstalling Joomla! core files:
Goto: Extensions -> Joomla Updater -> Reinstall Core Files
See if that helps, failing that disable content / system plugins which you have installed until you find the culprit.

I have completed Extensions -> Joomla Updater -> Reinstall Core Files but the problem was that I was overzealous in cleaning up the DB from a previous superadmin. I had to manually create a Root category row.
