I plan on using this product for a music school for special needs kids. Most of the classes will be one on one and a few one instructor to many. I feel the options are there to setup the classes as events, with the teachers, classrooms/locations as resources. What we require is to keep track of attendance of the students and resources. The purpose is that if the class/event is 5 sessions, then with attendance they can keep track of any missed classes and compensate for them.
I notice that in the Gold subscription there is some attendance feature. Will this function like we need it or will it require some customization?

Everything you describe can be done - apart from the logging actual attendance for specific classes within a series. You can record the actual attendance an individual for a specific event but currently not a repeat of an event within a sequence.
It may be possible to incorporate this feature or failing that you can add a 'note' to each attendance record to say that the individual was not able to attend a specific session. So there would be a record of the information but it would be a little more complex than just clicking a link/button
