Jmail alert - building a plug in

Postby chrisyork » Tue Jan 24, 2012 1:34 pm

I'm wanting to create a plug in for the component jmail alerts. I could do so by trial and error, but wondered if you can guide me as to which functions to use - I've taken a look at the 'latest events' module and might be able to adapt something from that... but you can probably steer me if you are so inclined.

I'm looking at something simple, so not too many parameters and switches, maybe just events up to a month in the future, for example.

I'd give you a copy of the plug in, of course! If I can get it to work, that is. I think it might be a useful addition and make jEvents even more useful.

(EDIT)- I'm not associated with JMail Alerts, just want to be able to use JEvents with this component if its possible.

Thanks

What does JMail alert do? Is it like a newsletter app and your looking to show a list of upcoming events in the message?

Pretty much - you can set it up to allow daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly updates - an email message which 'pulls in' updated content from the site. There are various plug ins for different components (and I am toying with an inferior (imho) event component because there's nothing for JEvents). Registered users then subscribe and can customise what they receive (if you set the preferences). Its based on plug ins, and they look reasonably logical to set up (speaking as a relative novice). So I thought I'd have a bash. I already use Acymailing for the main 'newsletter' but I thought this would give registered members a bit more flexibility to get updates as often as they want, rather than as infrequently as I manage to send them... And of course events are the most useful things to send out 'reminders' for.

Then when I upgrade membership with JEvents so that I can use your RSVP add on, things will be tickety-boo.

Here's the link to the component - its on the JED too

I would recommend that you join the JEvents club as a silver member and then download and experiment with the acyMailing plugin or the jNewsletter plugin. These would provide a good template for your jMail plugin.

when you get it finished and working and send it in I'll refund your membership and upgrade you to a contributor (equivalent to free gold membership)

How does that sound?

Hi Geraint,

Thanks for this suggestion. Yes, I should have used 'renew' not upgrade as I've expired, so to speak, as a bronze member.

I already have the acyMailing plugin through a subscription directly with them, I hadn't thought of that as a way of doing it...

Thanks also for the offer of being a contributor - I'll not count too many chickens, but would appreciate that if I can get it to work.

Watch this space, but don't try holding your breath for too long...

Cheers
Chris

The acyMailing from the JEvents club links in to the latest events module code - so that is a better 'role model' since it fits the description of your requirement better.
