mini calendar not working with joomfish

The minicalendar doesn't show correctly when in another language (simplified chinese) we need to get languages going on our site and will have disable the calendar if I can't figure out what's going on.

Jevents version 1.4.3 Joomfish version 1.8.2 - on a 1.0.15 joomla site.

when I choose Chinese as the language this is what is in the calandar location:

Update - I went into the simplified_chinese.php file and changed "DEFINE('_ISO','charset=gb2312');" to "DEFINE('_ISO','charset=UTF-8');" just for kicks, the result was that the mini calendar and events showed in chinese at it should but all the system translations where messed up - so, I'm not sure how this setting affected jevents but it corrected it - how do I get both system translations and Jevents to work properly?

Is your site running a UTF8 database and site encoding? If so you need to make sure the language files are saved in utf-8 format using a suitable editor.

The site database mysql version 5 is running in UTF8 - not sure if the site is - how would I convert the existing chinese language component to UTF8
