Email To: option for event submission/edit

Postby igirisjin » Thu Jan 28, 2010 3:20 pm

My JEvents calendar will be almost perfect soon ...
This is one of my last major requests.

I think it came up in some other post I made about a different topic.

Rather than a 'Notify' email it would be great to have a way of sending event info (text and html only) on to some address. This could be used to automate posts to a mailing list (mailman) after an event is published or edited. Lots of cms's accept content via email.
Useful if an option to included the publishers/users email address from Joomla to reply to.

Would be similar to what they have at Meetup.com or Facebook for event submission and edit where there are options to mail the new event or updated event to members. Maybe one day it could be done through Joomla internally so all users get event info mailed from the calendar? Similar to subscribing users to new posts in forums in phpBB.

Perhaps best set up as an option in the edit panel so other users have access.
Maybe several addresses could be entered;
Email Event To: address1, address2,...
Include your address? (check box?)

I'll see what is possible in JEvents 1.5.5

By the way I have a first cut plugin for the acyMailing newsletter (acaJoom to follow).

Just took a look at that ...AcyMailing.
Hadnt seen it before but it would be an alternative work around. For me the best thing is posting to an address which could go through mailman as it is a bidirectional/discussion mailing list.

Using a newsletter addon gets the message out though. If it includes the users email address who submitted the event then better. But they could include it themselves within the event description (not ideal).

Nice as AcyMailing is free at the moment. It would be good for sites that subscibe people for events.

I tried out acyMailing but the free version only allows admin to post a newsletter from the backend. I'm hoping the JEvents plugin will allow any registered users event submission to be sent in a newsletter?
Or will this be just a backend plugin for admin to include/import JEvents in a newsletter post?

yes the plugin incorporates the latest events module into a newsletter. The idea is that you'd send this once a week (say) and it would include all the up coming events

Uhm, many events are posted for the weekend the Wednesday or Thursday before (80% the same week as the event) so I was half expecting it was an immediate mailing from the event submission page.
Ah well, thats life.

BTW... I was going to PM you about which subscription package you use for the site. Might as well do it with 1 post here. I wondered if you would make it through the weekend without returning to the message board ... :)

I was away for the weekend - had my laptop but was only able to be online periodically.

I have the option to email a user/list of users on event creation as a feature planned for JEvents 1.5.5

Geraint

p.s. The subscription package is something I wrote myself piggy backing off Virtuemart as a order management/payment management system. None of the off the shelf packages available at the time provided the hierarchical forum group and user access controls I wanted.

Sounds good... waiting patiently with a nervous twitch for 1.5.5 then.

I hope remuneration equals the time you spend here.

Couldnt find the Acymailing plugin... and guessed there was still a bit of work to do on it. I know most people probably dont like being asked about release dates but roughly what is the period for 0.0.1 improvement. Will 1.5.5 be within a month or longer?
