Menu default category view by month

I am using the free version and plan on upgrading soon. for better support and once i see if this component will support my needs.
my issue right now is that
I cannot seem to change the default layout for the category menu item.
I would like for the the menu item when set to display a particular category...to display it in the "month" mode instead of a list of date inside a table.
I dont want to display all the categories by using the month view.
I have a Joomla menu of items each linked to different categories..but they all open in in some sort of hard to understand table,
How can this category menu link open the month view by default?
I am quite skilled in joomla but cannot seem to figure this one out

it was a little misleading in the terminology.
You have to set the menu item view by month....the filter by category.
