Ah, oldsite is our intranet, hosted internally.
Newsite is a www domain hosted elsewhere, a dummy site to test Joomla 1.6

If you don't use any JEvents club addons then you can export the events using an iCal export menu item and then re-import them to the new site. The downsides of this are that you loose the creator id information and it won't work for any club addon data e.g. locations, custom fields etc.
You could create a Joomla 1.7 update site on the intranet and then copy the files and database records over but this will only work properly if you copy everything otherwise categories, creator records etc. will get broken.

Ok, exported as an ical file.
Where/how do I import the ical file on the new site?
Thank you.

You have to "Create" a calendar and tell the system to use your ical file.

You must have at least one published native calendar which is market[sic] as the default calendar. It must also have a valid category association.
Whoops! Where do I get a native calendar?
I didn't know it shouldn't be deleted.
