Adding Date to Event Page

I have several seminar running with the same name but different dates. I want to include the date for the particular seminar that the user has clicked on at the top of the event page. How can I display $start_date and other variables in the event page (events.html.php)

I tried the obvious echo $start_date; and it only displays a blank. How do I define / pass the date variable to the events page?
