Using the New Features of JEvents 1.4

This is a short guide summarising how to use the new features of JEvents 1.4 (let me know if I misses something!). Some of these were new for 1.3.

New Config Options (via Components->Events->Events Config)

  • Creating events from frontend
    • the component can be configured to allow anonymous users to submit events from the front
    • publishers/managers/admin can be enabled to publish events from the front end
  • Show copyright footer - the copyright message can be disabled (remember we do deserve some credit for creating this component)
  • Event colour rule - you can force all events to follow category colours (to avoid kaleidescope effect) or restrict the use of event specific colours to backend editors
  • Title length cutoff - in the tooltips and monthly calendar long event titles can now be truncated to improve the look'n'feel
  • Show start time - do you want the monthly calendar to show the event start time or not?
  • Tooltip tab allows you to customise the look and position of the monthyl calendar tooltips

Note that a lot of the module configuration has now moved to the module settings

Calendar Menu Item (via Menu->mainmenu etc.)

If you can now specify a menu item pointing to the Events Component after you "Apply" the menu item you will see some new parameters. These allow you to choose up to 5 categories for the calendar to be shown. In other words if you choose categories "x", "y" and "z" only events from these categories will be shown. If you want to show events from ALL categories the do not make any selections here.

Calendar Module Config Options (via site module list)

  • As with the calendar menu item you can show events from all or a subset of your events categories.
  • Header Links - You can customise the 'header bar' accross the top of the mini-calendar
    • Title - do you want the title bar to be link, text or not to appear at all
    • Other settings - they should be self-explanatory. Experiment and see what you like the best.

Latest Events Module (via site module list)

  • As with the calendar menu item you can show events from all or a subset of your events categories.
  • Latest Events paramaters - see supplied readme in administrator/components/com_events/help directory for a detailed explanation

Events Legend Module (via site module list)

This is a new module that should be enabled on pages where the main events component is displayed (it doesn't make sense elsewhere!). This provides a color coded map for the events displayed in the calendar. You can also click on the category titles to quickly restrict the events displayed to that category alone!

EventReport? Mambot

In the description of an event you can now add an EventReport? mambot. It is ideal for displaying a link to an event report or photo gallery after the event expires or a link to a more detailed description of an event.

It replaces {eventreport}link text|url|day|month|year{/eventreport} in the with a link "url" using the given "link text" but only after "date to enable".
